Program Overview
CoverKids provides comprehensive health coverage for children 18 and under and maternity coverage for pregnant women.

Eligibility
CoverKids is comprehensive health insurance available to uninsured children age 18 and under with household income below 250 percent of the federal poverty level. Refer to the table of qualifying incomes based on federal poverty guidelines to see if your child qualifies. Additionally, pregnant women who meet other eligibility criteria can receive maternity coverage through CoverKids.

“Go Bare” (without health coverage): three months
» Waived for newborns up to four months of age (if the newborn was not previously enrolled in a prior insurance plan, the three-month "go bare" is waived)
» Waived for children moving to CoverKids from TennCare or from another state SCHIP program
Maternity coverage available for pregnant women
Screened first for TennCare eligibility or access to other state-sponsored insurance
Federal guidelines prohibit children of state employees and K-12 teachers from participating in this coverage
If the CoverKids application indicates your child(ren) are American Indian/Alaskan Native, please send a copy of your federally recognized tribal papers for additional benefits

Benefits
CoverKids offers comprehensive health insurance coverage, similar to the benefits offered to dependents of state employees. Emphasis will be placed on preventive care and services most needed by children, including vaccinations, well-child visits, healthy babies program, and developmental screenings. Refer to the benefit plan Tennessee has proposed to the federal government for more information on covered services.

Cost to participate
No monthly premiums will be charged but each participant will pay reduced co-payments for services. Families above the income limit who wish to purchase coverage for their child can “buy in” to the program by paying monthly premiums. The premiums for children over 250% of the FPL are approximately $227 per month per child for the year 2007.
